Top Grammar Mistakes Indians Make – And How to Fix Them

By EWM | Educare With Mohit

Grammar isn’t boring. It's the backbone of clear communication.

As trainers at EWM, we’ve helped thousands of Indian students and professionals improve their English.
And guess what? Most of them made the same grammar mistakes — again and again.

These mistakes are common, but the good news is: they’re easy to fix once you know them.

In this blog, let’s look at the top 10 grammar mistakes Indians make, with simple fixes you can start using today.

1. Wrong Use of "Only"

Wrong: She only eats fruits.
Correct: She eats only fruits.

“Only” should be placed near the word it modifies.

2. Using Present Continuous Instead of Simple Present

Wrong: I am having a car.
Correct: I have a car.

“Have” for possession is simple present, not continuous.

3. Adding “-ing” After Modals

Wrong: He can going to school.
Correct: He can go to school.

After “can, should, must, will,” always use the base verb.

4. Incorrect Plurals

Wrong: She gave me an advice.
Correct: She gave me some advice.

“Advice” is uncountable. Don’t say an advice, a furniture, etc.

5. Wrong Prepositions

Wrong: Discuss about the topic.
Correct: Discuss the topic.

“Discuss” doesn’t need “about.”

6. Extra Helping Verbs

Wrong: I didn’t knew.
Correct: I didn’t know.

After “did,” always use the base form.

7. Incorrect Use of Articles (a/an/the)

Wrong: He is best player.
Correct: He is the best player.

Superlative adjectives need “the.”

8. Wrong Tense While Telling Stories

Wrong: Yesterday I go to the market.
Correct: Yesterday I went to the market.

Past time = past tense.

9. Wrong Tag Questions

Wrong: You are coming, isn’t it?
Correct: You are coming, aren’t you?

Tag questions should match the helping verb and tense.

10. Using “More Better”

Wrong: This one is more better.
Correct: This one is better.

“Better” is already a comparative word. Don’t add “more.”
